School project Ghana – Volta region

Education is a powerful tool in fighting poverty. For this reason, the foundation focuses on raising funds that are used to support education in Ghana.
For many years there has been an band with Ghana. Initially this was a private initiative that is now transferred to Leli Foundation.
In the neighbourhood of Ho, in the Volta region in Ghana, we support a school where the Ho Diocese provides education. Also the Diocese tries to support the school financially as much as possible, for instance by paying for the teachers‘ salaries. These employees have a higher (non-material) motivation than those of schools that are set up from the public sector. Their commitment is high and this is transferred to the students. However, there is hardly any money for the maintenance of the school or the purchase of teaching material. Leli Foundation wants to make those funds available.
Volta is one of the ten administrative regions of Ghana and covers the south east border of the country. Because the number of schools is limited, schools in Ghana often have a regional, sometimes even national, function.

This means that, for many students, the school also provides room and board. On average, the children stay at school for 9,5 months and only visit their parents during the holiday period.
The average age at which students make their exam is between 14 and 16 years.

The capital of the Volta region is Ho and has approximately 70.000 inhibitors. The primary & junior secondary school provides room and board for approximately 200 students. The school is an example for the region and receives a lot of attention from the Ghana’s government because the results are higher than on average.

Finalised sub projects

Several sub project have already been finalised:

Water
• Building a water well with facilities

Buildings
• School building
• Computer class room
• School library

Hygiene
• Toilet building with running water

The teachers are very involved with the school and work long hours. That is one of the reasons why success rates are high. They expect to improve even more if the teachers can be housed on the campus.
Therefor they started to build a teachers building for which we currently need funds.

Achieved in 2014: housing for teachers

In a joint effort with Wilde Ganzen we were able to collect the necessary funds to accommodate teachers on campus. Now then will no longer need to cover large commuting distances and may be even more involved in the school and its students.

After summer holiday we received the school results: 33 students made their final exams and they all passed with above average grades! A wonderful result and a good starting point for their future.
